Laser Crack Measurement System for Pavement-Management Sytems

Pavement-management systems (PMS) can work effectively only when they are constructed by organically combining all activities concerned with road pavement (planning, design, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, evaluation, economic analysis, and research) and the data bank [1]. Then, the most important items are the establishment of a serviceability index, which represents pavement quality, and a prediction of performance, which is represented by the relation between time (and/or traffic) and the index. Pavement quality consists of two primary factors: riding quality and skid resistance. The factors influencing riding quality are pavement distress and/or roughness. Three major factors of pavement distress are cracking, rutting, and†¦show more content†¦Therefore, measuring the macro texture is one of the essential components in pavement management applications. The requirements for acquiring these factors are the following: (1) That data-acquisition cost is as cheap as possible; (2) that data analysis can be done in a short time; and (3) that data acquisition doesnt influence the speed of other traveling vehicles, in particular on roads with heavy traffic [2]. Pavement surface distress measurement is an essential part of a pavement management system (PMS) for determining cost-effective maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. Visual surveys conducted by engineers in the field are still the most widely used means to inspect and evaluate pavements, although such evaluations involve high degrees of subjectivity, hazardous exposure, and low production rates. Consequently, automated distress identification is gaining wide popularity among transportation agencies [6]. With the advancement of 3D sensor and information technology, a high-resolution, high-speed 3D line laser imaging system has become available for pavement surface condition data collection. With the advances in sensor technology, a 3D line-laser-imaging-based pavement surface data acquisition system has become available. The Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS) [7] can collect high-resolution 3D continuous pavement profiles for constructing pavement surfaces. The objective of

Barn Burning Essay Thesis Example For Students

Barn Burning Essay Thesis Youre getting to be a man. You got to learn. You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you aint going to have any blood to stick to you. This quote from William Faulkners Barn Burning does reveal a central issue in the story, as Jane Hiles suggests in her interpretation. The story is about blood ties, but more specifically, how these ties affect Sarty the central character of the story. The story examines the internal conflict and dilemma that Sarty faces. When the story begins, Sarty and his family are in a courtroom. Sarty, known in a proper setting as Colonel Sartoris, which in itself gives an insight into the families mentality. Sartys father, Abner Snopes is being accused of a barn burning. Right away, as Sarty is called to testify, you get an idea of what is going through the boys head, and the mentality that has be ingrained in him. He thinks to himself, Enemy! Enemy! , referring to the people that his father and his family for that matter are up against. Sarty would later discover that things are not always the way that his father leads everyone to believe they are. Sarty, somewhere deep down wants to just do what is right, but being roughly 10 years old, I dont think he quite has that figured out yet. His sense of right and wrong has been biased under the tyranny of his father. We also get a good idea of the personality of the father, Abner, by the way Sarty describes his physical appearance. Abner is not a man of a lot of words, demonstrated in many instances. We see this in the way he addresses his family, in the way he communicates with other characters, and most importantly in his outrageous stunts in his attempts to prove that know one will ever run over Abner Snopes and his family. He more or less uses actions to speak for him. Thats sort of the whole idea behind Abner Snopes. Hes a man with so much pride that he will go to any lengths to get revenge upon those who wrong him or try to own him, even if it means breaking the law. His actions, make bold statements about what kind of man he is. Barn burning is his largest and always final statement. But, he sort of builds up to that, as we can see in the story. Once Abner and his family are run out of town in the beginning of the story which seems to be a frequent occurrence with this family they find another home and another farm to work. Immediately, Abner takes Sarty up to the landlords house, where Abner purposely steps in manure and walks into the house and proceeds to rub the manure into a very fine rug. There seems to be no apparent reason for the action other than the fact that the landlord in a way owns Abner Snopes and his family, because the landlord own the land they will have to work for a living. Therefore, they are at the mercy of the landlord. This doesnt sit well with Abner, and the purpose of soiling the rug must be, again to make a statement about who he is, and to let the landlord know that he doesnt bow to anyone. Soon, the rug is brought down to the farm and presented to the family, who must now clean it. Abner, instead of getting his wife, or his sons to clean the rug, not to mention himself as well instructs his two daughters, described as big, lethargic and bovine, to take care of the task. The rational behind this is, Abner knows that the two daughters will more than likely not do a proper job of washing the rug. Hes a very spiteful man. When the rug is returned to the owner and determined to be ruined, Abner is ordered to pay the land owner twenty bushels of corn against his families share of the crop. .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .postImageUrl , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:hover , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:visited , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:active { border:0!important; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:active , .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2e7d8009f6743a28d99a0b0b8a65e04d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Anna Karenina and Hester Prynne EssayIt is later decided in court, by the Justice of the Peace that he will only be required to pay ten bushels of corn. Of course, Abner, being the way he is, will still not stand for it. Inevitably, one night Abner decides he will make his signature statement, the barn burning. Of course, the story doesnt come right out and say this, there is an ambiguous quality to this work by Faulkner. We are clued into Abners plans for the burning when Sarty is sent to get the oil. Then, when Sarty, says Aint you going to even send a nigger? we can confirm what is planned. It is at this point that the conflict within Sarty arises once more. Sarty had hoped that his father would stop this evil pattern of destruction and disregard for the law and the property of others. However, Sarty at this point is beginning to realize that his father will probably never change. He contemplates running away, something he will soon do. After being detained by his mother for a short time, at his fathers request, Sarty breaks free and heads directly for the land owners house. He knows now what he must do. He must warn them of what his father and older brother and about to do. Continually on the run, Sarty warns the people in the big white house and takes off down the road. Sarty soon hears a number of shots, which he assumes to be his father and brother being shot by the landlord who has caught them in the act. This may or may not be the case, again, this shows the ambiguity of the story in various places. Regardless of what actually happened, he knows he can never go back. He just keeps on going, and never looks back. It is at this point that Sarty breaks the blood ties, and the fear of suffering the wrath of his fathers. Sarty is free. But, not without paying a price. I believe Sarty still feels that pull of blood that the author speaks of, and he made this decision with obviously a lot of feelings on both sides of the issue. He still cares for his family, he still loves his father, even though he now realizes that what his father does is wrong and he had to try to stop it and cease to be a part of it. The fact that Sarty can never return home is not a question of whether he choose that, but rather its not a choice, he cant go back. So, the conflict within Sarty is not really every resolved, just the situation changed.

Tennis Essays (1049 words) - Startup Cult, Maureen OHara Filmography

Tennis It was my last year at San Fernando high. It was a memorable time of my life because I knew that I would graduate at the end of that year. My senior year also became the most significant year of my life, because I got to do something that I have always wanted to try tennis. I had always wanted to play tennis ever since I was a kid, but there wasn't enough time for me to join tennis team. One day, Mr. Cockerill who was my teacher and also the tennis coach, encouraged me to join the team. I thought it might be the only chance for me to get involved, and decided to join the team. Mr. Cockerill was assigned to be our coach. He is a tall, strong old man with a red face. I loved to listen of what he said, because I felt he was giving me a valuable lesson especially during practice hours that he thought it could be use for the game. My first lesson was not that great. I had to pick up the balls most of the time. I was unable to hold firmly a tennis racket's grip. I practiced very hard almost every day after school included the weekends. There were few times I wanted to quit the challenges, but my friends had given back my courage. These friends of mine had started playing tennis two years before I came in to join the team. Their skills were so much improved compared to me. They were willing to stay and practice with me. I was also happy that my oldest brother, an excellent singles player helped me out at the start. At home I often admire his awards and whispered to myself that; "I would never get one like this all my life. It is impossible for me to be an athlete." In the beginning, I knew that I wasn't a good player, but it didn't stop me from joining the team. However my father was worried that if I came home so late at night, I wouldn't have enough time to study for other classes. He didn't allow me to be involved in this kind of activity. I wanted to beg my dad to let me continue, but we didn't have a good communication with each other. I felt either very guilty for not joining the team or for going against my dad's will. He would disown me if I didn't listen to him. I felt I was pushed to the edge of a cliff. His attitude had emotionally hurt when I personally heard it of what he had treated me. I couldn't stop crying for days. My tears just ceaselessly drooped. My coach worried why I didn't look so well in class. He asked few times, but I couldn't find a way to start explaining the whole situation. I really wanted to resolve this problem as soon as possible. It was my dream to be in tennis team, and Mr. Cockerill was the only person who can talk to my dad. Finally, he actually did let me join the team. In the end, I realized that how difficult it was for me to be on the tennis team. I should play my best in order to please my dad, my coach, my friends, and for San Fernando high. During the first tournament, I was very nervous and excited at the same time. It was my first competition; I couldn't hold my racket still. My entire body was shaking, but luckily no one noticed that. Mr. Cockerill gathered us in class and explained what the strategies would be and how we should play. He also reminded us to have a positive attitude even if we lost the game. At the end of the game I lost to my opponent with a scoring 3-8. I felt very happy that at least I had made some effort for my score, and I took me few weeks to practice. Mr. Cockerill was very kind and so understanding. He didn't only slow anything about the lost, but he also took well care of us with cookies, fruits and drinks. I had followed his teaching, "as long as you all do your best, I am very please, and I ask no more than that." I kept it as an encouragement. My time was devoted to this game at least one or two hours everyday. Mr. Cockerill was very satisfied because I would never

What Was the Open Door Policy in China

What Was the Open Door Policy in China SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Looking to learn more about the Open Door Policy? The Open Door Policy was an important policy that affected Asian, European, and US trade for decades and even contributed to the Japanese/American conflict in WWII. What was the Open Door Policy definition? Why and when was the Open Door Policy created? What are the impacts of it? We answer all those questions and more in these open door notes. What Was the Open Door Policy? A brief Open Door Policy definition: The Open Door Policy was a trade agreement between the United States, China, Japan, and several European countries. US Secretary of State John Hay created the Open Door Policy in 1899/1900 in order to allow the US, Japan, and select European countries equal trade access to China, a country that previously had no trade agreements. The Open Door Policy lasted nearly 50 years, until the communist party’s 1949 victory in China’s civil war. In the rest of the guide, we’ll dive deeper into the specifics of the Open Door Policy. We’ll discuss why the Open Door Policy was created, how it was established and maintained, and what its impacts were. Why Was the Open Door Policy Created? Simply put, the United States was worried it was going to lose trading access with China, and it wanted a policy in place to protect its ability to continue trading with the Chinese. In this section, we’ll look more closely as to why the US cared so much about trading with China, and why there were worried their access would be cut off. The Open Door Policy was created during the Age of Imperialism, a period during the late 19th century and early 20th century when European powers, as well as countries like the US and Japan, were attempting to expand their global power through colonialism and territory expansion. China was particularly seen as a lucrative prize, so multiple countries built a large presence there, and they began setting up trading stations and deploying troops to different regions of the country in order to have the best access to China’s trade. The United States got into this game a little late. It wasn’t until after the Spanish American War ended in 1898 that the US began to take a deep interest in China. At the end of the war, the US ended up with a large amount of land in Asia, primarily the Philippine Islands. This newly-acquired land caused the US to look more closely at China, and they saw that trading with China could earn them a lot of money. However, multiple other countries had already realized this and had established large spheres of influence in China. European powers such as Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, and Belgium had well established colonies and influence in Asia and Africa. Japan was also exerting significant power in China. During the first Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), Japan and China fought for control of Korea. After Japan won the war, it sharply increased its power in both Korea and China. The US’s sphere of influence in China was not nearly as well-established as those of the other foreign powers there, and US President McKinley worried that the other foreign powers would limit the US’s ability to trade with China and potentially block the US from trading with China at all. How Was the Open Door Policy Implemented? In 1898, US President William McKinley announced his desire for a policy that would allow countries equal access to trade with China. In effect, there’d be an â€Å"open door† to Chinese trade, and one country couldn’t close the door to another country.President McKinley was concerned the US would be forced out of the Chinese trade by Japan and other European countries, and he wanted a policy that explicitly protected the US’s right to continue trading with China. As a result, in 1899, US Secretary of State John Hay began circulating diplomatic notes among the major world powers (Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia) at the time to get the Open Door Policy formally approved. Because of his work doing this, Hay is often seen as the author of the Open Door Policy. Hay’s diplomatic notes proposed that all countries should have equal trading access to the entirety of China and those foreign countries must allow Chinese officials to regulate the trade and collect taxes from it.The purpose of Hay’s notes was to grant all the major powers equal access to Chinese trade and reduce the influence of countries that already had an especially large hold in China (such as Japan and Russia) so they couldn’t force other countries (particularly the United States) out of the Chinese market. None of the countries Hay spoke with formally agreed to the Open Door Policy. However, none explicitly opposed it, and the European countries unofficially supported the plan, so Hay announced that an agreement had been reached, and the Open Door Policy became the de facto trade policy in China. In 1921/1922, after challenges to the Open Door Policy by Chinese nationalists as well as Japan (discussed more in the next section), the US attempted to make the Open Door Policy official at the Washington Naval Conference. During the war between China and Japan that began in 1937, the US continued to strenuously support the Open Door Policy and increased embargoes on many commodities to Japan as a result of Japan not following the policy. The Open Door Policy remained in effect until Japan’s defeat in WWII in 1945 and the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. After these events China began to be recognized as a sovereign state with control over its own trade agreements. What Were the Effects of the Open Door Policy? What did the Open Door Policy do? The Open Door Policy was an important agreement that reflected the imperialist attitude of many global powers at the time and those countries’ intense desire to expand their global reach. The Open Door Policy had three main impacts. Increased Chinese Backlash Against Foreigners The creation of the Open Door Policy increased foreign influence in China, which led to a rise in anti-foreign and anti-colonial sentiment in the country. The backlash against foreigners led to widespread killings of missionaries working in China and an increase in nationalist feelings among the Chinese. The Boxer Rebellion was one of the most important events caused by this anti-foreign movement. The Boxer Rebellion started in 1899, when a Chinese group known as the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists (known as â€Å"Boxers† to the English) initiated an uprising against foreign influence. The US, Japan, and several European countries fought back and eventually defeated the Boxers in 1901. Even after the rebellion ended, foreign soldiers continued killing and looting in many villages. The Boxer Rebellion weakened the power of the Chinese ruling dynasty and contributed to the end of Europeans’ attempts to colonize China. Chinese and American Conflict With Japan Even though Japan did not reject the Open Door Policy when it was created, the country challenged and openly violated the policy multiple times, which led to conflict with China and the US.Japan first violated the Open Door Policy when it presented its Twenty-One Demands to China in 1915. During WWI, Japan sent the list to China demanding an expansion of Japanese control in the Chinese region of Manchuria, as well as significantly increased control of the Chinese economy. Japan gained little from the Twenty-One Demands, but sending them caused a deterioration in Japan’s relationship with the US and Great Britain, who resented the challenge to the Open Door Policy. In response to the Twenty-One Demands, China, the United States, Belgium, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Portugal attended the Washington Naval Conference in 1922 and signed the Nine-Power Treaty which officially affirmed the Open Door Policy and the sovereignty of China. However, in 1931, Japan violated both the Nine-Power Treaty and the Open Door Policy when they invaded Manchuria, an event known as the Mukden Incident. The Mukden Incident led to Japan establishing a puppet government in Manchuria, becoming diplomatically isolated as other countries condemned its actions, and withdrawing from the League of Nations. The Mukden Incident also led to the second Sino-Japanese War between Japan and China, which lasted from 1937 to 1945. It was the largest Asian war of the 20th century. The US allied with China in the war and strenuously supported the Open Door Policy by increasing embargoes on exports of key commodities to Japan. These embargoes led to heightened tensions between Japan and the US and were one of the causes of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor in 1941 and going to war with the US in WWII. Increased US Interest in East Asia The Open Door Policy was one of the first major steps the US took to expand their influence in East Asia, and it was one of their most important footholds in the area.Once the US realized how lucrative trading with China could be, they pushed hard for the Open Door Policy, which would give them secure access to Chinese trade and expand their influence in the area. This increased influence in East Asia was lucrative for the US, but it also caused them to be drawn into conflicts in the region, such as the Boxer Rebellion and conflicts between Japan and China. The increased American influence in the area and its involvement in the area’s conflicts also led to rising tensions with Japan, which culminated with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Summary: Open Door Notes What was the Open Door Policy definition? The Open Door Policy was a policy between China, the US, Japan, and several European powers that stated each of those countries should have equal access to Chinese trade. It was created in 1899 by US Secretary of State John Hay and lasted until 1949, when the Chinese civil war ended. Why was the Open Door Policy created? The US had recently gained a foothold in East Asia, and they were afraid they’d be forced out of the Chinese market by countries who had been there longer than them, so they created the policy to ensure they wouldn’t lose their ability to trade with China. The Cabinet Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Cabinet - Essay Example The 1962 cabinet represented high family-based ties in the political arena. Even though members of the cabinet had different personalities and backgrounds, they share close family relationships in one way or another. For example, the Al-Asabah family and the larger Asil family held a significant proportion of the cabinet over the aforementioned period. Majority of cabinet members came from influential Kuwaiti families. In this respect, dominant cabinet ministers also represented some of the most influential families in the history of Kuwait. Over and above family-based monopoly in the cabinet, a significant number of cabinet members were well off compared to the rest of the population. Majority of cabinet ministers came from wealthy families, and most importantly, they were wealthy themselves. This made them even more influential as far as the politics of the country were concerned. In addition, more than 50% of ministers in Kuwait were in their 30s or 40s in terms of age. This made the 1962-1988 Kuwait cabinet one of the most youthful around the world. Even as Kuwait made critical progress politically, education and literacy levels were still a challenge to the larger populace. Cabinet members had basic education, but most of them lacked advanced academic and professional experience. For example, the number of engineers in Kuwait was significantly low at a time when the newly independent nation was striving to invest heavily in technological development. In 1962, engineers were less than ten in the entire Kuwaiti population. Critical disparities were also evident in regards to where ministers attended their school. Cabinet members with basic primary education attended school locally, and so did members who had secondary education. College and university degrees, however, required that education be accessed outside Kuwait. This shows that some Kuwaiti

Week 8 dq - Essay Example Honestly making my decision on elective abortion, I would argue that the fetus has life just like other people. Some of the personal principles that makes my professional life successful include; self-motivation, humility, loyalty, confidence and professionalism. In this regard, professionalism as my value is based on the basis that it is significant to value professional behavior all the time at work place. This kind of behavior incorporate things like speaking and dressing to maintain my image since I take pride in my behavior and appearance. Having professional behavior helps complete high quality projects and act as role model to others. Humility is another value that I have embraced and encouraged at work place and has assisted me in the objective of crating trustful, cohesive and amalgamated work force where each one of us have had the humility of accepting and learning from our failures and attaining empowerment that is needed in exploring the next opportunity. The other value is self-confidence in that I cannot be afraid to ask questions on areas that need more knowledge and the desire I have to inspire others. Lastly, there is self-motivation in that I require little or no supervision and direction to get back to my work. For instance, at work place, I encouraged employee’s feedback and provided them with an opportunity to be in charge in their areas of speculation. There is this moral issue regarding right to life. For example, in popular culture, the "fact" that people have rights is assumed as a given. Arguing from subjective perspective, this is up for grabs. The existence of a human right must be described and justified with concrete evidence. Historically, our idea of "human rights" developed from the idea that humans are composite substances, made up of a body and soul (mind) union. This theory that human nature is made of two substances is one application of

Alexanders divinity Essay -- essays research papers

What evidence is there that Alexander may have believed that he was of divine descent? And how convincing would this evidence have appeared to one of his followers? From studying the sources of the ancient world that talk about Alexander The Great, it is clear that many of them present Alexander as being some type of heroic figure or Demi-god. However you could question whether Alexander believed this himself. Only by studying his actions and the actions of those around him can we draw any type of conclusion on this matter. This can be done through the use of sources that exist from the time of and around his death. Most of these sources have been lost or are incomplete however, so I feel that it would be best to mainly consult the sources of Arrian and Plutarch Although both of these were written a couple of hundred years after Alexander’s death they are still the most complete. Plus Arrian would seem to have many sources to consult in his writing, all from Alexander’s time. His main two sources were Ptolemy and Aristobulus, both of whom were on Alexander’s campaigns. Plutarch’s account is more a biography than a his tory since it is full of stories and anecdotes, however it contains some information that Arrian doesn’t so it is still a worthy source to consult. In this it would first be prudent to study all those events in Alexander’s life, which would seem to suggest that he did have some belief that he was of divine origin. The primary example of this would appear to be his visit to the shrine of Ammon. While in Egypt, Alexander had an urge to visit the temple since he wanted to consult the oracle there, which had a ‘reputation for infallibility’. Arrian also states that both Perseus and Heracles had consulted it at some point. And since it is clear from Arrian’s account that Alexander longed to duplicate, if not surpass, the feats of both Perseus and Heracles, so surely he must consult this oracle too. Arrian (book 3) claims that ‘the blood of both flowed’ within Alexander, which suggests that Arrian was of the opinion that Alexander did have some divine heritage since Heracles was supposedly the son of Zeus. In any case, Arrian also states that Alexander also visited the temple because he himself felt that he might be descended from Ammon in some way. If this is true then it would certainly seem that Alexander did in some way believe that he was of d... ... countries that he defeated. Alexander, being the great tactician that he was must have realised the benefits of people believing that he was more than just a great ruler and actually connected to the gods themselves. As far as the beliefs of his followers go, I believe that the willingness of the Persians to prostrate themselves in front of him and his Macedonian troops loyalty were important indicators. This is seen when they followed him across the vast desert in which the temple of Ammon was situated, just to answer the question of whether or not he did descend from the Egyptian god; this suggests that they too believed in his claim to being of divine descent. And it can be seen that there are not many men that were as revered and honoured by the people of the time as Alexander was. Leaving no doubt in my mind that both Alexander and his followers were convinced that he was of divine descent and that they felt that he was worthy of all the tribute that was paid to him after he died. The threatened amazon rainforest

The homes of these animals are under severe threat and not slowing down. In Just the last five months of 2007, more than 3,200 sq. Kilometers, an area equivalent to the state of Rhode Island, was deforested. The Amazon is the world's biggest habitat and we are gradually loosing it. The causes of the issue and the process There are many different opinions or attitudes toward threatening the Amazon coming from many different people of different backgrounds. When someone has an pollen they have a thought about how something should be.People Like Indigenous people have opinions and so do people who work at the Amazon all the way to those people who work in the government. All these different opinions can conflict against each other as everyone may have a different view towards this issue. There are a number of issues for the Amazon being under threat and the mains reasons are: ranching and agriculture, commercial fishing, smuggling, damming, logging and mining. The reason for these threa ts is that the Amazon is the biggest rain forest In the world and people Is taking advantage of this.More than half of Earth's rain rests have already been lost forever to the greedy human demand for wood and land. The Amazon is like a pile of gold that is being over-invested' in by the rich to make them richer and now is running out. The rate of population growth is climbing at a rapid rate but the rate of meat consumption is greater and this is having a harsh effect on the Amazon rainforest's. The high amount of demand means we need to farm more cattle and the Amazon Is their first destination with Cattle pastures occupying 80% of the deforested areas In the Amazon.Ranching and agriculture Is the single arrest contributor to deforestation. Ranching is the extensive art and science of which there is a large herd of cattle, sheep, or horses raised( as shown in the picture on the side). The art of ranching Is a complicated art to master which requires you to know many things and keep records of all your cattle, you should maintain records, made sure that the area you are ranching is secure, prepare for breeding season and much more. Ranching Is the only way to keep up with the high demand of meat. Ranching occurs In the land that has fallen velvet to deforestation. This Is because hat land is already available and is perfect condition to breed a large herd of cattle, sheep or horse. Ranching goes on in 80% of the land that has fallen victim to deforestation. This activity does take a lot of land but is needed to satisfy current beef consuming rates. The main source of food and income for indigenous Amazonian people are fish, but In the modern day large industries are harvesting fish over fishing and threatening wildlife as if indigenous Amazonian don't have fish to eat they will have to eat the wildlife.Over fishing is gradually increasing and may come catastrophic if nothing is done. Over fishing is when we fish so much in a certain regain that the fishes strug gle to reproduce. This seems like a near impossible task to do but with modern day tactics and technology like industrial trawlers(as shown on the side)armed with gill nets that can scoop up entire schools of fish in a completely indefensible attempt to bring food to market and up to 60% of their catch is lost to spoilage. Industrial trawlers are spoiling the balance of the Amazon. Over fishing occurs in the Amazon River. This is because the Amazon River s very large and is the home to many species of fish which can easily be fished. Experts predict that there are around 5000 different fish species in the Amazon rainforest's. The Amazon River is also the home to some of the fiercest piranhas. Smuggling is a big business in the Amazon with it was estimated that the illegal trade in wildlife is worth at least SIS$5 billion. The reason this activity happens is that it provides a good living for the smugglers and their family. Smuggling has to stop Smuggling is when you take animals ille gally and sell them to people. This activity as oh know is going on in the Amazon and is one of the rainforest's greatest threats. While smuggling you must be quite and sneaky to make sure you don't get caught. Many countries have extremely strict laws against smuggling animals because of its severity. Smuggling animals happens all throughout the rainforest's, this is because the rainforest's is not guarded by any person 2417 and it is easy to get away with smuggling in the Amazon. Smuggling is a big industry which potentially can exceed of IS$20 billion annually.Smuggling is one of the many reasons why the Amazon is endangered and why we need to stop it. We build large hydroelectric dams in the Amazon in order to provide us with energy and provide clean pollution free energy. In our growing world hydroelectric dams provide a bee ken of hope for a better future but we Just don't have the land to provide for them, that's why we are using the land that has fallen victim to deforestatio n in the Amazon. Bell Monte is the world's biggest hydroelectric dam in the world currently under construction in the Amazon basin. These dams are funded by international aid and development organizations like the World Bank which have led to widespread forest loss. Hydroelectric dam's power is produced as water passes through the dam, the amount of energy produced is based on the amount of water that passes through. Electricity is produced by a device called a turbine. Turbines contain metal coils which are surrounded by magnets. When the magnets spin over the metal coils, electricity is produced. Turbines are located inside dams. The falling water spins the magnets within the dam (as shown on the previous page). These dams are made in the cleared out area of the Amazon. They are made there because that is the ideal place to make them and because of the low cost. The dams are a leading contributor to land degradation in the Amazon witch needs to stop. Hardwood trees provide wood for many things like furniture, building material, charcoal all the way to paper. If logging in the Amazon was stopped, we would struggle to keep up with the demand of paper and Just everyday items made out of wooden concerning any wooden things. Wood and paper manufacturing enterprises in Italy accounted for 21. % of Logging is important for our daily lives to strive. Logging is when people go to a certain area and cut down trees and transport the logs to a saw mill. They do this moieties with the help of machines but most of it is still hard labor. Since 1970, over 600,000 square kilometers (232,000 square miles) of Amazon rainforest's have been destroyed (a graph of deforestation on top). Logging is important to maintain the world's economy. Logging occurs in the Amazon rainforest's. This is because the Amazon has lots of trees to log and is so vast it will fuel the logging industry for many years to come. The Amazon rain forest is 5,500,000 km. We need to do something about this aris ing future crisis. Many everyday items are made from minerals mined in the Amazon basin. We need to mine to keep up with the high demand of the goods that mining produces due to our plants rapid rate of population growth. Every second 4. 3 people are born worldwide; while every second 1. 8 deaths occur. The world population has a net gain of 2. 5 people every second. Our world depends on mining. Mining is when you dig into the ground for different minerals and materials (as shown in the end of the previous page). This is done with the help of huge machinery and manual labor. When one is mining they need to have many requirements like, they need to have all the machinery ready to purify the minerals and someone to by he minerals and many more. Mining is a vital part of any countries economy. Mining occurs in the empty land of the Amazon because the land there is rich in minerals and extremely vast. Mining in the Amazon is done by the big mining companies because they are the ones who have the money to invest in it.We cannot underestimate the impact mining can have on the Amazon basin, we need to act. Different perspectives relating to the issue Indigenous people strongly oppose of any threats to the wildlife in the Amazon rain forest because they live of the wildlife and if the wildlife is gone there will be no food, Deforestation is a major factor of habitat loss and the natives don't like the cutting down of trees, not only because the food will be gone but because the food that is left will create immense competition within the tribes and create great dysfunction, forcing them to create enemies.Indigenous views should be held at a great level of importance as it is traditionally their land that we are entering. Most of the people working to threaten the Amazon don't want it to stop. For the people working at the work sites, this work is giving them and their family a living and if it stops their evildoer will collapse because they will not have a Job. The wor kers need the Amazon to survive. The Brazilian government (building shown on the side) agrees with the workers, as the Amazon is a great income source for many things and is great for the economy.Without the Amazon many people would be placed into poverty and would promote the black market and illegal activities such as illegal logging, on top of all that the world would not be able to cope as their will be a sudden decline in the number of products being manufactured and with the high demand there is people and companies would not be able to cope. The world needs they have the right to think that way. The indigenous people think about the future and don't like their environment being destroying, while the workers are thinking about their position and what it would be like if their Jobs where cut.The government has to think about everything and consider all scenarios and come to a conclusion. I believe all of these opinions are valid opinions that should be respected. Individual, gr oup and governments responses to the issue Greenback( logo on the side) is a global environmental organization and they have en fighting strongly to keep the Amazon safe and out of harm's way. Green peace's goal is to have zero deforestation, globally by 2020. By do this by lobbying political powers to take action against this issue and convince the public that their cause is top priority.Greenback fight for a good cause. Greenback fought for the new forest code not to pass the government as that will lead to an increase in deforestation. They campaigned for the Brazilian president, Dilemma to stop this regressive forest code. Greenback failed but say that the fight is not over yet. Greenback fight for a good cause. World Wildlife Fund (WFM) is another global environmental organization (logo on the left), but they have done more to help the Amazon rainforest's then green peace. They have invested in depriving soy farming, cattle ranching, hydrophone and illegal and unsustainable log ging.WFM is paving the way for environmental groups worldwide. Soy farming- WFM works with the soy farming industry to make sure that they do as much as they can to reduce their impact to the wildlife around them. Cattle ranching- WFM educates ranchers and teaches them why they should not establish new ranches to increase profit while giving them tips o get the most out of their current ranch, they also teach ranchers how to ranch in a more efficient way. Hydrophone- WFM provides scientific support to help find dam locations that will do the least harm to the environment.Illegal and unsustainable logging-WFM works to create market conditions that conserve the world's forests WFM was successful in all of these endeavors. Their plans are more believable and efficient then Green peace's plans to eliminate deforestation. Eliminating all deforestation by 2020 is a much more difficult task then negotiating with the people ho lead these threats to the Amazon and WFM know that, they have re alized that they have to work with the workers as these threats provides them with Jobs and a living.WFM are a company who has thought of everything. Meanwhile the Australian government (parliament house on the side) has been doing good deeds. Australia has donated $250,000 dollars to the Amazon rainforest's protection program. Australia's donation was only the 2nd country to make a donation to the Amazon rainforest's; this donation was a major boost to the program and will be used wisely. Brazier's government has been doing things to protect the Amazon basin like setting up a Amazon fund. This fund is aimed at raising money from governments and corporations. So far, it has secured an agreement with Norway, which will provide US $1 billion over 70 years. As of 2009, Norway has distributed $100 million towards the Amazon Fund. Brazier's government is slowly helping the Amazon recover. These actions by the Brazilian government have been mildly successful considering how much money they have raised. Individuals have played a big part in saving the Amazon by doing little things like buying a piece of land from the Amazon for says to protect rainforest's like the Amazon all the way to restricting what they buy to eating less meat to lower the demand for it.

Edgar Allan Poe s The Dark Poems That He Is Famous For

Edgar Allan Poe Why did Poe write the dark poems that he is famous for? Almost every student has read either one or many of Edgar Allan Poe’s work. Poe is one of the best and most famous writers in American Literature. Professor Gene Doty of Missouri University of Science and Technology explains, â€Å"The meaning which the text has for the reader emerges from the interaction of the reader’s world with the world of the text† (Doty). Anything written is a context that includes the â€Å"writer’s feelings, beliefs, past experiences, goals, needs, and physical environment† (Doty). What Professor Gene Doty means, refereeing to Edgar Allen Poe, is that he wrote these sinister, dark poems, because of what has happened to him during his life.
